Church Life

Through worship, fellowship, meeting together, and serving in ministries together, we come to enjoy the responsibilities, personal purposes, and corporate strengths of being part of Christ's body

In Search of Timothy
By Tony Cooke

Primarily for church staff members and volunteers, but equally applicable to pastors, this book is a must read. Solidly based in scripture, personally challenging and edifying at the same time, this will help all church staff and volunteers realize the importance of their spiritual and mental alignment in regards to the mission of the local church. When we are brought into right relationship with each other, and our pastors, and understand our roles the power of the unity of Spirit is realized and released. Can be used (should be used) as a small group study as well. Fantastic insights.

Not you, that’s for sure! No one you’ve ever met, either. None of us are normal according to God’s definition, and the closer we get to each other, the plainer that becomes. Yet for all our quirks, sins, and jagged edges, we need each other. Community is more than just a word—it is one of our most fundamental requirements. So how do flawed, abnormal people such as ourselves master the forces that can drive us apart and come together in the life-changing relationships God designed us for?

In Everybody’s Normal Till You Get to Know Them, teacher and bestselling author John Ortberg zooms in on the things that make community tick. You’ll get a thought-provoking look at God’s heart, at others, and at yourself. Even better, you’ll gain wisdom and tools for drawing closer to others in powerful, impactful ways. With humor, insight, and a gift for storytelling, Ortberg shows how community pays tremendous dividends in happiness, health, support, and growth. It’s where all of us weird, unwieldy people encounter God’s love in tangible ways and discover the transforming power of being loved, accepted, and valued just the way we are.

The Apostle Paul declares his own need for ongoing discipline and diligence, lest after preaching to others he would become “disqualified” (1 Corinthians 9:27). If one can be disqualified from effective ministry, it stands to reason that there is also a process of becoming qualified. What is involved in becoming (and staying) a “...vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work” (2 Timothy 2:21)?

The great challenge of spiritual leadership is not simply in knowing the right words to say or knowing the right things to do; it is in being the right person. When Moses chose those who would assist, there were qualifications. When the early church chose its workers, there were qualifications. When Paul spoke of bishops, elders, and deacons, there were qualifications. In an age of skepticism and mistrust, the world and the church is looking for credible, honest, and godly leaders who are full of integrity and honor.

Bestselling author Randy Alcorn introduced readers to a revolution in material freedom and radical generosity with the release of the original The Treasure Principle in 2001. Now the revision to the compact, perennial bestseller includes a provocative new concluding chapter depicting God asking a believer questions about his stewardship over material resources. Readers are moved from the realms of thoughtful Bible exposition into the highly personal arena of everyday life. Because when Jesus told His followers to “lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven,” He intended that they discover an astounding secret: how joyful giving brings God maximum glory and His children maximum pleasure. Discover a joy more precious than gold!

The on-road practices of prayer and Bible reading should be bolstered by the other kinds of encounters with God that occur unexpectedly—complete with the bumps and bruises that happen when you go “off-road.” Becoming an off-road leader requires the cultivation of certain spiritual disciplines that allow the presence of the Holy Spirit to arrange your interior life.  This book explores twelve central spiritual disciplines—six personal and six organizational—that Christian leaders of all ages  need if they are to change themselves and their churches to reach out to the culture around them.

Jesus and Community
By Gerhard Lohfink

Subtitles "the social dimension  of Christian faith",  this book helps shift our understanding of Jesus' purpose away from a purely inner and eternal focus, an effect of our society's individualism.  The author explains Jesus' teachings in relation to the Israel of His time as the establishment of a new social order and His disciples being a recreated Israel.  The New Testament communities which followed their lead are marked by manifestations of the Spirit and new social behavior:  brotherly love and the exclusion of discrimination, domination and privilege.  We need to see that Jesus's kingdom is in this world, but does not conform to the structures of this world.  The present-day church is called to once again be the "contrast society" - a counter-culture, which attracts non-believers by living what it preaches, by following and imitating Jesus' desire for a new people of Israel.
