The  Gospel of Matthew is unique in containing the substance of all Christ's teaching.  This well-organized commentary provides important insights for our growing understanding of this key gospel.  The discussion helps us recognize how Matthew acts as a bridge between Old and New Testaments, how the Christ events--birth-death-rising again--fulfill salvation history, and how to understand the identification of Matthew with Hebraic history and tradition.

Brueggemann invites the reader into the thick complexity of Old Testament texts on Moses; King Solomon; the prophet  Elisha; and King Josiah, where the authority of power is undermined in cunning and compelling ways.  He insists that we --as readers and interpreters-- are always contestants for truth.  As agents of truth (prophets, disciple-citizens and others hidden from the power elites), we hold out hope for the powerless & marginalized against an imposed silence that their situation will be transposed by God, who intrudes and shatters the false claims of totalism.  Rather than be in collusion - either consciously or unconconsciously – with the totalizing systems of the world (consumerism, political economy, military, etc.), the church should be a witness and example of an alternative way of living that says “We must obey God rather than any human authority.”

We can learn important lessons from the life of David, seeing how struggles can refine our faith.  We come to realize conflict is a normal part of life; spiritual growth usually doesn't happen when things are going smoothly; doing the will of God is not always easy or peaceful; and God's desire is that we learn patience and submission in the midst of struggles.

The Gospel of Luke
Westminster Press

This commentary can be used for devotional reading or serious Bible study.  Luke is the only New Testament writer who was not a Jew, addressing his writing to Gentiles.   He made observations with a historian's care which add empathetic details to our knowledge of Christ.  Luke' s account is especially notable for its inclusion of women and parables of Jesus that do not appear elsewhere.

This book presents an overview of interpretations of some major ideas in Paul's letters:  probing the limits of grace; Paul's relationship with Jewish law; the nature of faith; the meaning of being "in Christ"; the righteousness of God; Who is Israel?; and the Second Coming of Christ and resurrection of the dead.  Some of the ambiguities and flexible usages in Paul's writings permit a range of opinions on these topics, resulting in a “rich complexity that stimulates reflection” and ultimately deepens our understanding of the gospel.
